Doug was born in Corydon, Iowa. He was raised in West Des Moines, graduating from Valley High School. He attended the University of Iowa on a baseball scholarship and earned a BBA in Finance in 1978.

After graduation, Doug worked for a local automobile dealership before starting his investment career in 1981 with Dain Bosworth. He then joined previous co-workers at D.M. Kelly & Company in 2001. He currently holds Series 7, 63 and 66 licenses and is a Financial Advisor of D.M. Kelly & Company and DMKC Advisory Services, LLC.

Doug has enjoyed building long-term relationships with clients, recognizing that everyone's economic and life situations are unique. He’s always been committed to providing straightforward and independent advice to help people make the best decisions with their money.

Doug and his wife, Deb Thomas, have four children and three grandchildren. Doug is a long-term volunteer to Bethel Mission/Hope Ministries, and Deb volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate addressing child welfare issues as they relate to abuse/neglect. They are interested in most sports and enjoy the outdoors, especially hiking and biking.
